Frequently Asked Questions

What do you want to know?

How will hiring you affect my partner’s role during the birth?

My role is to enable you and your partner to experience this birth as deeply each of you want to. I help others at the birth to participate by teaching them physical and verbal skills well before the main event. During labor and birth, I will help your partner feel confident in helping you, bringing the two of you closer than ever.

Sometimes, birth can be overwhelming for those who've never witnessed it before; in those moments, I am there to provide as much support to the mother while the others rest, recuperate, and reenergize. Many birth partners feel relieved to have someone there who can offer perspective and reassurance during this sometimes foreign and always exciting time.

What are your interactions with midwives and doctors like?

When doulas and medical staff work in harmony, we become a seamless team to serve you, the pregnant woman. Because midwives, nurses, and doctors have many other responsibilities, they are unable to be at your side through every moment of your labor. Studies have indicated that women have higher levels of satisfaction with continuous care, which is where I come in. I am able to be with and assist you throughout your entire experience. Together, medical staff and doulas provide excellent care for a mother. I help explain medical terminology, facilitate greater understanding if there are questions about what's going on, and remind you of your preferences if there's any confusion. I will always encourage you to listen to yourself and your provider's good advice.

I would love a doula at my birth. How can I afford one?

We invest in many things as life occurs: graduations, weddings, and more. Birth is just one day, but your entry to parenthood will echo throughout your life. The support that a doula provides has been shown to increase satisfaction with the experience, and there are many creative ways to ensure you can take advantage of what a doula has to offer. Loved ones may be happy to contribute to a doula fund, especially if it's listed as an option on a registry. HSA accounts can be used to cover the costs. I offer payment plans to support ease of pay. I believe each woman who wants a doula can benefit from one, and so if you feel in extreme financial need, let's chat!
